Jury Recommends Death Penalty in Raymond Lee Oyler Arson Murder Trial

The same jury that found Raymond Lee Oyler guilty of murdering five U.S. Forest Service firefighters has recommended that the arsonist be put to death.

After just four hours of deliberation the eight-woman, four-man jury came back with the penalty phase verdict Wednesday afternoon in a packed courtroom of firefighters and surviving family members of the fallen fire heroes at the Riverside County Hall of Justice. Earlier this month Oyler was convicted of five counts of first-degree murder, 20 counts of arson and 17 counts of using incendiary devices to start fires between May and October of 2006 within a few miles of his Beaumont home. Guilty Verdict in Raymond Lee Oyler Arson Murder Trial

Raymond Lee Oyler has been convicted of arson and murder for the deaths of five U.S. Forest Service firefighters who were overcome while fighting the Esperanza Fire and on several counts of arson and using an incendiary device for several other California wildfires in 2006. A jury of eight women and four men deliberated for six days and issued their verdict in the Riverside Hall of Justic Courtroom of Superior Court Judge W. Charles Morgan on Friday, March 6th. First Week Of Testimony in Raymond Lee Oyler Arson-Murder Trial.

Last week a California jury began hearing testimony in the arson-murder case against 38-year old Raymond Lee Oyler. Riverside County Deputy District Attorney Michael Hestrin says he can prove Oyler deliberately set 23 fires including the Esperanza wildland fire that snuffed out the lives of five U.S. Forest Service firefighters.
