Memorial Tribute to Firefighter Marine Killed in Iraq
Sergeant Brian Dunlap was a both a firefighter and a member of the United States Marine Corps. He tragically died on September 24, 2005 in Al Taqaddum, Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated during combat. Recently, Sgt. Dunlap’s firefighter and military uniforms were inducted into the San Diego Hook and Ladder Firehouse Museum and a scholarship was established in his name during a memorial celebration at the historic museum.(cont. on site)

NFPA’s Risk Watch Program Helps Educators and Firefighters Teach Children About Safety
Injury is the leading health risk for children under 14. In the United States over 6,000,000 children sustain accidental injuries each year, and over 5,000 of these are fatal. In response to this the NFPA developed Risk Watch, the nation’s first comprehensive injury program that school districts and first responders can use to teach young children about safety. The same jury that found Raymond Lee Oyler guilty of murdering five U.S. Forest Service firefighters has recommended that the arsonist be put to death.
After just four hours of deliberation the eight-woman, four-man jury came back with the penalty phase verdict Wednesday afternoon in a packed courtroom of firefighters and surviving family members of the fallen fire heroes at the Riverside County Hall of Justice. Earlier this month Oyler was convicted of five counts of first-degree murder, 20 counts of arson and 17 counts of using incendiary devices to start fires between May and October of 2006 within a few miles of his Beaumont home. The California State Firefighters Association (CSFA) is the largest fire service organization in the state of California. The CSFA has 28,000 members from all areas of the firefighting community including paid and volunteer firefighters, military and private contract firefighters, members of the California Department of Forestry, United States Forest Disaster Office, Office of Emergency Services, State Fire Marshal’s Office, State Fire Service and Training Program and California state-employed firefighters, as well as auxiliary members from fire service support organizations. Established in 1922, CSFA was founded with the mission of promoting the enactment of laws to protect the public from fire and to improve the working conditions for firefighters. Eighty-seven years later this is still their goal, and as part of this mission they offer members a multitude of benefits.

Jim Beam and Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund Assist Families of Firefighters in Need.
The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing firefighters and their families with financial assistance for their educational, medical and equipment needs. This charity was formed in honor of Terry Farrell, a decorated firefighter with FDNY Rescue 4 and the Fire Chief of the Dix Hills Volunteer Fire Department who perished on September 11, 2001, while fighting fires and rescuing victims at the World Trade Center. Since 2005, Jim Beam has been a supporter of the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund, and now donates $2.00 from the sale of each case of specially labeled bottles to the organization. Riverside County Deputy District Attorney Michael Hestrin has informed Superior Court Judge W. Charles Morgan that he has just three more witnesses to put on the stand when testimony resumes Monday.

Thirteen HME Ahrens-Fox Type 1 Engines Delivered to California Fire Departments Through OES Grants.
In January of 2008, HME Incorporated was awarded a multi-year contract from the State of California to build over 120 Type 1 fire engines. These vehicles were to be distributed to Cal Fire, the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (OES), the Department of Corrections and the Sonoma Center. Models to be included in this contract were the HME Ahrens-Fox, Silver Fox, Wolf, CAT (City Attack Truck), RAT (Rapid Attack Truck), Rodent, and Arsenal. Since then and despite the economic downturn that the state has faced, thirteen of these new Type 1 engines have been delivered to fire departments throughout California through a grant awarded by the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.
