Memorial Tribute to Firefighter Marine Killed in Iraq

Sergeant Brian Dunlap was a both a firefighter and a member of the United States Marine Corps. He tragically died on September 24, 2005 in Al Taqaddum, Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated during combat. Recently, Sgt. Dunlap’s firefighter and military uniforms were inducted into the San Diego Hook and Ladder Firehouse Museum and a scholarship was established in his name during a memorial celebration at the historic museum.(cont. on site)

Guns-N-Hoses Grappling Competition

The Guns-N-Hoses Submission Grappling Competition pits firefighters and law enforcement agents against each other for both sportsmanship and charity. The vision of Los Angeles Police Officer Mark Mireles and Orange County Fire Authority firefighter Ken Gabrielson, this sport combines the principles of wrestling and jiu jitsu, and brings first responders together to help the families of fallen firefighters and police officers. Recently, Guns-N-Hoses held their Conrad Salinas Patriot Cup tournament at the CFED Conference and Expo in Palm Springs, California. (cont. on site)

Injury is the leading health risk for children under 14. In the United States over 6,000,000 children sustain accidental injuries each year, and over 5,000 of these are fatal. In response to this the NFPA developed Risk Watch, the nation’s first comprehensive injury program that school districts and first responders can use to teach young children about safety. Celebration of Women Firefighters in San Diego.

The San Diego Firehouse Museum recently hosted a gathering in celebration of the women of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The event was attended by current and retired female members of the department, and it recognized the achievements of the women who broke the fire department’s all-male barrier in the late 1970’s. NVFC and Baskin Robbins Honors America’s Favorite Junior Firefighters.

Junior Firefighter and Explorer programs across the United States are attracting America’s youth to the fire service and give them excellent knowledge of fire ground operations. Many young men and women who participate in these programs go on to serve their communities as paid or volunteer firefighters as adults. Recognizing this as the key to the future of firefighting, the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) sponsors many programs aimed at assisting fire departments foster their junior firefighter programs. Zoll AutoPulse Increases Patients Chances of Surviving Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SAC) is the leading cause of death in the United States, with over 325,000 deaths each year. Studies show that one American dies from sudden cardiac arrest every two minutes, and 95% percent of patients die before reaching a hospital. The Zoll AutoPulse, a non-invasive cardiac life support pump, has given emergency first responders an effective method of performing chest compressions on victims of SAC, increasing their chances of survival. Jury Recommends Death Penalty in Raymond Lee Oyler Arson Murder Trial

via Fire Department Network News - Jury Recommends Death Penalty in Raymond Lee Oyler Arson Murder Trial.

The same jury that found Raymond Lee Oyler guilty of murdering five U.S. Forest Service firefighters has recommended that the arsonist be put to death.

After just four hours of deliberation the eight-woman, four-man jury came back with the penalty phase verdict Wednesday afternoon in a packed courtroom of firefighters and surviving family members of the fallen fire heroes at the Riverside County Hall of Justice. Earlier this month Oyler was convicted of five counts of first-degree murder, 20 counts of arson and 17 counts of using incendiary devices to start fires between May and October of 2006 within a few miles of his Beaumont home. CSFA Offers Firefighters and Their Families Valuable Benefits and Services.

The California State Firefighters Association (CSFA) is the largest fire service organization in the state of California. The CSFA has 28,000 members from all areas of the firefighting community including paid and volunteer firefighters, military and private contract firefighters, members of the California Department of Forestry, United States Forest Disaster Office, Office of Emergency Services, State Fire Marshal’s Office, State Fire Service and Training Program and California state-employed firefighters, as well as auxiliary members from fire service support organizations. Established in 1922, CSFA was founded with the mission of promoting the enactment of laws to protect the public from fire and to improve the working conditions for firefighters. Eighty-seven years later this is still their goal, and as part of this mission they offer members a multitude of benefits.
