Sergeant Brian Dunlap was a both a firefighter and a member of the United States Marine Corps. He tragically died on September 24, 2005 in Al Taqaddum, Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated during combat. Recently, Sgt. Dunlap’s firefighter and military uniforms were inducted into the San Diego Hook and Ladder Firehouse Museum and a scholarship was established in his name during a memorial celebration at the historic museum.(cont. on site)

The California State Firefighters Association (CSFA) is the largest fire service organization in the state of California. The CSFA has 28,000 members from all areas of the firefighting community including paid and volunteer firefighters, military and private contract firefighters, members of the California Department of Forestry, United States Forest Disaster Office, Office of Emergency Services, State Fire Marshal’s Office, State Fire Service and Training Program and California state-employed firefighters, as well as auxiliary members from fire service support organizations. Established in 1922, CSFA was founded with the mission of promoting the enactment of laws to protect the public from fire and to improve the working conditions for firefighters. Eighty-seven years later this is still their goal, and as part of this mission they offer members a multitude of benefits.
Pierce Manufacturing was founded in Wisconsin in 1913 when Humphrey and Dudley Pierce began building aftermarket and custom truck bodies for Ford’s 1-ton truck chassis. By 1940 the operation had grown, and Pierce was building fire trucks. Now owned by the Oshkosh Corporation, Pierce is the largest fire apparatus manufacturer in North America. Thousands of firefighters, EMTs, instructors, and fire service vendors gathered in San Diego, California for the Firehouse World Expo. One of the largest fire and EMS conferences on the West Coast, this convention was hosted by Cygnus Business Media, the publishers of Firehouse Magazine, www.Firehouse.com, EMS Magazine, www.EMSResponder.com and other first responder websites and publications. The conference and expo was held from February 15th to February 19th at the San Diego Convention Center, and attendees were able to experience a wide variety of training and information on the latest tools and technology available to the fire service and EMS personnel. While cutbacks are being implemented in fire departments across the United States, San Diego Fire-Rescue, which protects the second largest city in California, is hiring firefighters to fill several vacancies left by retirees.
